Clinical care

At Unosaúde, Ana Murteira supports people with acquired language, speech and swallowing disorders associated with neurological conditions. Assessment and rehabilitation are individualised, taking into account how communication and swallowing difficulties affect daily life, wellbeing and quality of life for the person and their family.

She holds a degree in Speech and Language Therapy from Escola Superior de Saúde de Alcoitão and a doctorate in Cognitive Sciences from Macquarie University in Australia. She combines clinical practice with teaching as an invited adjunct professor at the School of Health of the University of Algarve.

• Communication disorders following stroke or traumatic brain injury
• Communication disorders associated with dementia and other neurocognitive disorders
• Swallowing disorders associated with acquired or progressive neurological conditions, including stroke and Parkinson’s disease

Clinical experience and approach

She began practising in 2008 after graduating in Speech and Language Therapy from Escola Superior de Saúde de Alcoitão. Her work has focused on interdisciplinary rehabilitation of speech, language and swallowing disorders following brain injury and other neurological conditions.

She has worked in hospital inpatient care, intensive care, continuing care and home care. Experience across these settings helps her understand the functional needs of people and families throughout rehabilitation.

Alongside clinical practice and university teaching, she contributes to the training of master’s students and speech and language therapists.

• Doctorate in Cognitive Sciences — Macquarie University, Australia, in partnership with the International Doctorate for Experimental Approaches to Language and the Brain (IDEALAB), bringing together Universität Potsdam, Università degli Studi di Trento, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and Macquarie University.
• Master’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy, specialising in Language Disorders — Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
